ReMo: the waste classification flow and the material value screen

Recycling doesn't fail at the level of intention. Most people want to do it. It fails at the bin, in the two seconds where someone holds an object, doesn't know which category it belongs to, and guesses. ReMo is a waste classification app built around that moment.

ReMo onboarding screens
Three screens on waste responsibility, then an account.
The in-app tutorial
A guided first run rather than a tour you dismiss.
The ReMo home screen
Daily challenges, AI tips, the map and points — with the language switch on the same screen.
The notifications screen
Challenges, milestones and sorting reminders, grouped by day.
The location screen with the bin map
An interactive map of nearby bins, filtered by waste type.
Saved addresses
Home, office, a friend's place — saved, so the route is one tap.
Decisions · 01

Fit the answer inside the hesitation

Chose
A classification flow answerable in about two seconds.
Rejected
A thorough, educational flow that teaches the categories properly.
Why
The decision happens standing at a bin, not sitting down. A flow that demands a research session doesn't get used at the moment it's needed.
Evidence
Nothing sits between the camera and the answer: no category picker, no confirmation screen, and no lesson about which bin it belongs in.
Quick Scan: AI identification with weight and price
Point the camera at an object and it comes back named, weighed and priced: Bottle Plastic, 2.60, Rp 3,120.
Bin Locator with distances and directions
Facilities with distance, travel time and directions, shareable with someone else.

Pay people in value, not virtue

Chose
Showing what recyclable materials are actually worth.
Rejected
Streaks, badges and environmental encouragement.
Why
Doing the right thing stops being motivating once it stops being novel. A number attached to the material outlasts that.
Evidence
Points redeem against Spotify, Uniqlo, Adidas and McDonald's vouchers with the threshold printed on each, and the wallet holds a withdrawable balance rather than a score.
My Rewards and voucher history
Points against real vouchers — Spotify, Uniqlo, Adidas — with the threshold shown before you commit to it.
Plant Tracks progress
Sell ten wrappers, get a tree. Progress drawn as a graph rather than a promise.
Daily and monthly challenges
Daily and monthly, each with a clock on it and a point value.
A daily challenge: recycling video quiz
A video quiz that corrects you rather than only scoring you.
A monthly challenge: recycle facts quiz
The same shape at a longer cadence.
The points screen and how points are earned
Where the points come from, spelled out before you go chasing them.
The wallet: balance, vouchers, history and withdrawal
Balance, vouchers, transaction history and withdrawal — with a PIN on the way out.

Make selling it as easy as throwing it away

Chose
Address, time, date, material and weight collected on one booking path, then the request tracked from message to map to completed.
Rejected
A contact form and a phone call to arrange collection.
Why
Recycling competes with the bin, and the bin takes two seconds and no arranging. Anything that needs a phone call loses that race before it starts.
Evidence
The booking takes material and packaging, then weight, and returns an estimated value before the user confirms — so the trade is priced before it is agreed.
The recycle flow: request, tracking and completion
One request seen three ways — the thread it started in, the driver on the map, and the receipt that closes it.
Pick up and drop off booking
Address, time, date, materials and weight — the whole booking on one path.
The scan flow with barcode and object recognition
Barcode or object, with the estimate shown before you accept it.
The ReMo store
Points spend on goods, not only on vouchers.
Store cart, reviews, shipping and checkout
Cart, reviews, shipping and payment, drawn end to end.
Address, promo, PIN and payment confirmation
Address, promo code, PIN, confirmation — none of it left to the build.
Profile and edit profile
Profile and edit, with Delete Account given real weight rather than hidden.
Notification settings, recycling assistant, statistics and AI assistant
Notification toggles to the individual switch, a recycling assistant, statistics, and a voice AI.
The ReMo screen set in dark mode
The whole product again, in dark.

The two-second target was a design assumption, not a measured one. I never timed real users at a real bin, and that number is doing a lot of work in the argument, so it's the first thing I'd test.
